Australian Fitness Industry saves $100 million in health care costs

An economic contribution report commissioned by Fitness Australia and prepared by Access Economics estimates that Australia’s fitness centres can provide savings in direct health care costs of up to $108 million per annum. Further economic modelling has revealed that a 3% increase in fitness centre utilisation by the adult population has the potential to deliver additional health care savings in the order of $204.8 million and lead to around 2,609 extra full time employees in the workforce.

Industry leaders gather to discuss strategies

Industry leaders from around the nation recently gathered together at a series of luncheons hosted by Fitness Australia to discuss important industry issues and a range of strategies to meet key industry objectives. The lunch meetings were also attended by business and government relations advisors for Fitness Australia and were designed to update industry leaders on recent initiatives undertaken by Fitness Australia. The industry leaders offered ideas for strategies that will continue to build the profile, influence and reputation of the Australian fitness industry into the future.

Updates were provided to industry leaders on Operation M.U.S.I.C and the industry research reports, including an industry profile report and economic contribution study, were reviewed and discussed.

Fitness industry message gets legs in the media

Fitness Australia's submission to the Preventative Health Taskforce over a year ago may well have got some legs if last week's media is anything to go by. Fitness Australia is actively seeking to position the fitness industry as a major component in the battle against obesity and disease.

You may have already seen some of the coverage on the publication of the House of Representatives Health and Ageing Committee's report on obesity. The headlines focus on proposals to increase public funding for bariatric surgery and on calls for reductions in the salt, sugar and fat content of foods, but the report also asks government to consider making gyms and other physical activity programs more affordable - potentially through tax subsidies.

Fitness Australia v PPCA: Closing submissions to be heard in the Copyright Tribunal

Fitness Australia will present its closing submissions to the Copyright Tribunal at the end of June in relation to the PPCA proposal to radically alter the licence scheme and massively increase the cost of using protected sound recordings in fitness classes.

The recent hearing of this matter extended over 5 weeks and almost 1,400 pages of transcript with many volumes of documents in evidence. Over 25 witnesses were cross-examined, 10 of whom were economic experts.

2008 Sportspeople Workplace Survey - Preliminary findings released

Shifts in salaries, hours worked and education emerged as the hot spots for the sport, fitness and aquatic sector over the past 5 years according to new research published in May.

Over 1,000 respondents participated in the 2008 Sportspeople Workplace Survey with data compiled by Dr. Dave Arthur from the Graduate College of Management, Southern Cross University. The preliminary data released by Sportspeople provides direct comparisons with the 2003 Sportspeople Workplace Survey.

Subsequent pregnancies and eligibility for parental leave

Question: We have an employee who is currently on maternity leave with two months to go until she returns. She has recently called and advised that she has fallen pregnant again. Although she will still be returning to work, she will be in the workplace for around 6 months before she goes on maternity leave again.

I have looked at the Standard and it says that an employee must have completed 12 months continuous service with the employer prior to going on leave.

Superannuation - Common issues

Question: Is it possible to salary sacrifice an entire salary (100%) into superannuation?

Answer: Yes. An employee may choose to salary sacrifice their entire salary into superannuation.

Deductions from wages

Question: We have an employee who has been with us a number of years and has recently resigned. We have granted her annual leave in advance to an amount of two weeks. Now she is leaving and the annual leave is outstanding. Can we withhold this amount from her final wages?

Answer: Generally, it is not possible for employers to make a deduction from an employee wages for an overpayment of this kind.
